Drilled shafts, also known as bored piles, are high-capacity cast-in-place concrete foundation elements that excel in supporting heavy axial and lateral loads from high-rise structures and civil infrastructure. The primary engineering challenge in saturated environments is maintaining borehole stability during the excavation and concreting phases to prevent necking, soil intrusion, or structural compromise.

To mitigate the risk of borehole collapse in cohesionless or saturated soils, engineers typically employ temporary or permanent steel casings or mineral/polymer slurry displacement methods. The use of bentonite or synthetic polymers creates a hydrostatic head that exerts outward pressure against the borehole walls, preventing the ingress of groundwater and soil. In the GTA, the selection between casing and slurry depends heavily on the proximity to existing structures and the specific geotechnical profile obtained from pre-construction boreholes. In areas with dense glacial till over bedrock, telescopic casing methods are often utilized to ensure a clean socket is achieved for end-bearing capacity.

Concreting in saturated shafts is strictly performed using the tremie method. This involves a gravity-fed pipe system that delivers concrete to the bottom of the shaft, displacing the lighter slurry or water upward. The tremie pipe must remain submerged at least several feet within the fresh concrete at all times to maintain a continuous, uncontaminated column. Rigorous quality control, including Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP), is standard practice in Toronto’s heavy civil sector to verify the homogeneity of the shaft and ensure no voids or soil inclusions were formed during the pour. Ensuring the integrity of these deep foundation elements is paramount for the long-term settle-free performance of urban infrastructure.
