When importing engineered fill, it must be placed and compacted immediately to achieving the required Proctor density before it loses its heat and becomes uncompactable. The use of salt or chemical de-icers in fill material is strictly prohibited as it alters the geotechnical properties and corrosive potential of the soil, potentially damaging future underground utilities.

Safety protocols also see a significant escalation during cold-weather operations.
